What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis refers to a trance state that we enter into naturally or induced by another.
Hypnotherapy is using the hypnotic state to bring about change. Such as improve ones performance in sports, public speaking, lose a habit, rid a fear, build confidence and so on.
Hypnotherapist is the person who induces the state of hypnosis to facilitate the client to make the changes they seek. Its uses are limitless, ranging from performance enhancement, behavior modification to the treatment of physical and mental illness. The Hypnotherapist is not a magician, nor can they take control of the mind of another.
Hypnosis is a normal and natural state of being. Hypnosis can be described as being in altered states of awareness, an inner focused attention, deep concentration.
Hypnosis is far from sleep. It can be described as conscious reasoning being suspended either momentarily or for a period of time and imagination, visualization and relaxation heightened. This is the path that often parallels sleep, deep meditation , inner reflection and is also a path to our unconscious mind. It is often likened to trance, meditation, prayer. The unconscious mind is the part of us that works 24/7. It never sleeps, it is taking care of all the things we do automatically e.g. breathing, seeing, hearing, feeling and processing information moment to moment. The unconscious mind’s priority is to keep us alive. The unconscious mind is our central processing unit that communicates with the conscious mind. The conscious mind acts as a filter and evaluates the information through our thought processes using a variety of means such as logic, reasoning, language.
Common ways of entering a hypnotic state. Driving, Shopping, Reading, Watching TV, Ironing, any repetitive or monotonous task. We spend most of our time in this state, as we go about our daily lives. All hypnosis is self hypnosis even that of trauma.
Can hypnosis help me?
Clinical Hypnotherapy will empower you to change by using the resources you’ve already got. Your mind. However, hypnosis is not an artificial condition but a skill learned by the client to correct an existing symptom or problem. The therapist is the facilitator with whom the client must work co-operatively in order to achieve the required results. It is not a quick fix or one stop shop. Hypnosis will help you understand your mind and take better control of it rather than the mind taking control of you.
What will hypnosis do for me?
Hypnosis can do for you what you want it to do, because it is Inner-Directed. Break a habit, lose a fear, relieve tension and anxiety, improve one’s self-image, help prepare you for surgery, post surgery, pregnancy & birth even work with fertility issues and trauma.
How will I know I have been hypnotized?
Each person will experience hypnosis differently. Some will have a heightened state of awareness, they will hear the sounds in the room, will hear every word said. For some the sounds fade in and out, or not at all, for others they are in a profound state of relaxation. At any time, the client is free to exercise their will.
How can my Hypnotherapist help me?
This can be divided into two categories. A) They can teach you self-hypnosis, so that you can practice daily to alleviate yourself of your problem/situation. B) Working with you in the altered state to achieve the change you require.
How many sessions will I require?
The number of sessions vary depending upon what is being treated. Take Stop Smoking for example. Some clients have been hypnotized before and for some reason they have started smoking again. It may only take one session and the client stops smoking, for others there may be secondary reasons that keep the person smoking, and looking at those reasons may take a couple sessions. In my practice, I recommend three sessions as a minimum to achieve optimum results.
Other treatments such as preparation for surgery, trauma, preparation for childbirth are over a period of time and will range upward of three sessions. The timings are unique to the client.
