The rise in caesarean rates have grown from 25% in 2001 to 33% in 2011. What has happened to increase the growth in C-sections in the past 10 years? A government funded research of more than 14,000 women from 2009, 2010 and 2012 have found that Queensland has the highest rates of caesareans , with WA coming in second.
The research highlights that 50% caesarean sections are performed within private medical care with a strong bias towards as apposed to 30% from the public sector where it was discourages. It boils down to the “risk” management of birth and how each sector perceives risk. Information about choices were confusing in the public sector whereas obstetricians would advise towards having a caesarean.
